I Am Not A Fashion Photographer

So I have to admit that this is my second time attempting an fashion alt fashion shoot. I've always gravitated more towards the photojournalistic style and type of photography. Perhaps I have been avoiding the hair, makeup, and posing of models, and I do not have a studio of any sorts either. What I've come to realize when I worked with Sara Davenport a little over a month ago, I've actually grown pretty comfortable with posing people. I never really thought about it (I have no idea why?!) but I have been posing newly wed couples and their bridal parties and family for weddings! To top it off, Lauren was amazingly easy to work with as well. She had her own set of poses, she was very open and took to my ideas as well, and this is definitely not one of the first times she's done this. She has a Model Mayhem here that you can check out her past work.

The main big challenge for this shoot was space, rather the lack of space to work in. Thankfully I work with small off camera flashes rather than large studio strobes. So that helped me out in saving space. The room had all white walls and a white ceiling which would help bounce around the light, and my flashes would have to be very close to the subject which increased light efficiency and really softened the light. Where the real downfall was was in what lens I could use. I couldn't stand far enough back to even use my 50mm! So what lens did I use? My ultrawide Tokina 11-16 f/2.8! Photos where people are the main subject are generally shot with a telephoto lens (50+mm, usually 85mm-200mm). So I zoomed in my lens to 16mm to reduce as much distortion ultrawide lenses tend to make, and kept my fingers crossed. I was definitely surprised and happy with the final images, for using an ultrawide angle lens for this type of shoot! So you might be wondering what the first alt fashion shoot looked like? This is my friend Caitlin, we did this back in May 2010.
